Understanding your home's heating and cooling system doesn't have to be complicated. Here's a simple guide to essential HVAC terms.
Air Conditioner (AC): Removes heat and humidity from indoor air and pushes the cooled air into your living space. It includes an outdoor condenser unit and an indoor air handler or evaporator coil.
Air Handler: The indoor component that contains the blower (fan) and the evaporator coil. It circulates cooled or heated air throughout the house.
Capacitor: Helps motors start and run efficiently. A common point of failure in straight cool systems, especially in hot climates.
Compressor: The heart of the outdoor AC unit. It pressurizes and moves refrigerant through the system to remove indoor heat.
Condensate Drain: Removes moisture collected from the indoor air. It’s important to keep this line clear to prevent water leaks or system shutdowns.
Filter: Traps dust, allergens, and debris. It should be replaced monthly or as recommended to keep air clean and systems efficient.
Heat Pump: A system that can both heat and cool by reversing the refrigerant flow. Not typically part of straight cool systems, but useful to understand when comparing HVAC options.
HVAC: Stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. In straight cool systems, this typically includes an air conditioner for cooling and a separate electric or gas furnace for heating.
Refrigerant: A chemical that flows through coils and absorbs heat from inside your home, transferring it outside. R-410A is the most common type used today.
SEER Rating: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This measures cooling efficiency. A higher SEER means more energy savings. In Florida, a minimum SEER of 14 or higher is required for new systems.
Split System: A common HVAC setup in which the air conditioner has an indoor unit (air handler) and an outdoor unit (condenser). Straight cool systems are typically split systems.
Thermostat: A wall-mounted device that allows you to set your preferred indoor temperature. It sends signals to your HVAC system to heat or cool as needed.
